SEC Investment Scam Checklist

Before investing your hard-earned money, you may want to check the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Investment Scam Checklist




If you come across any investment offer by phone, e-mail, flyers, newspaper ads, or directly by any person, or by any other means, you must ask questions to protect yourself and your money. 


HOW?

Get the following information:

1. Name of the person and the company making the offer.
2. Address of bothe the person and the company.
3. Phone number, particularly the land line. Do not accept cellular phone number(s) --- the owner cannot be traced.
4. SEC Registration as an investment taker. Please bear in mind the following:
a. SEC Company registration does not grant authority to sell investment instruments, such as securities, bonds, commercial papers, or similar financial instruments.
Important! >>> Do not be tricked or tempted by offers of promissory notes or post-dated checks which will be issued in your favor to allegedly ensure the payment of earnings and the reimbursement of your investments.
b. Only investment houses and financing companies with QB quasi-banking) license and with SEC registered securities may offer to sell the same to more than 19 investors.
c. Only SEC registered persons (brokers/dealers/sales man) may offer or sell SEC registered securities in public. 


Do NOT deal with THEM, IF

  1. Unwilliing or hesistant to give any of the information
  2. No SEC registration or appropriate licnese to engage in activities indicated in 4b or 4c.
  3. Claims to have QB licnese or SEC registered securities.
    a. Get the information such as the number of investors, minimum placement, rate of return, etc.
    b. Chekc and verify the name of the company from the list of companies who may offer investments posted on the SEC Website
    Inquire from the SEC Corporate Governance & Finance Department 584-6103 or the Markets & Securities Regulation Department 584-5703.

  4. Fails to give information or not listed in the SEC Website

     
What to DO?

1. Report to the Enforcement and Investor Protection Department (02) 584-6337.
2. Seek NBI or police assistance in case of emergency situation.
